Hair loss by coloring?
- Constant hair coloring damages the hair structure and causes the hair to become brittle and fragile.
- If the color gets onto an inflamed, sensitive scalp, there is a high probability that the hair growth phase will end prematurely and lead to an increase in hair loss.
- While second-order hair loss is triggered by dyeing, first-order hair loss is usually a diffuse hair loss or hereditary hair loss, the causes of which include iron deficiency, an unbalanced diet or a hormonal imbalance.
Hardly any decision changes a woman's appearance and charisma as much as choosing a different hair color. However, the joy of the new look is severely dampened if the coloring affects the quality of the hair, leading to breakage and even hair loss. But why exactly? What happens to our hair when we color it?
dye hair
Dyeing often involves permanently altering the natural hair color through a chemical process: Ammonia or similar substances lift the hair cuticle, causing the hair to swell. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, dye particles oxidize to form pigments and bond firmly with the hair keratin. Bleaching, on the other hand, oxidizes existing hair pigments.
Hair color and hair breakage
To allow the color pigments to penetrate the hair's fiber core (cortex), the chemical substances also break down the hair's protective lipid layer. While moisturizing products containing proteins or ceramides (hair treatments, hair masks) can help repair the damage, hair tends to become brittle after coloring if the cuticle layer isn't flat. Brushing or washing can then cause the hair to break relatively easily.
Hair color and hair loss
An irritated, red, and itchy scalp after coloring hair is problematic for the hair when inflammatory processes spread from the scalp to the hair follicles. If the cellular metabolism of the hair follicles is disrupted by inflammation, it is very likely that the hair growth phase will end prematurely. Two or three months later, excessive diffuse hair loss will occur.
Dye your hair sustainably
To protect hair from dryness, breakage and hair loss after coloring, women should follow the following tips.
- Dyeing is only an option for a healthy scalp. Scalp irritation or even scalp diseases are a possible exclusion criterion.
- Do not wash your hair for one or two days before coloring: the natural lipids form a protective film over the scalp.
- Do not leave hair color on longer than recommended in the instructions.
- For irritations or dry scalp, a soothing gentle shampoo Use, especially before coloring, to prepare the scalp for the procedure.
Double hair loss
Many women with excessive hair loss dye their hair and like to use highlights to visually enhance their hair's fullness. Naturally, they are then alarmed when their hair suddenly breaks off, even more hair falls out, and their tendency toward thinning increases.
Assess your hair situation realistically
Women often struggle with the realization that coloring their hair could lead to hair loss and perhaps even baldness. The fact is, however, that hair dye triggers, at most, second-order hair loss. As soon as women stop using chemical dyes, the lost hair will grow back vigorously. Often, however, those affected are unaware of the original hair loss that prompted them to change their hair color.
First-order hair loss
The actual first-order hair loss is usually a diffuse hair loss or hereditary hair loss. Causes of diffuse hair loss include, for example, iron deficiency, an unbalanced diet, or a hormonal imbalance, such as after pregnancy, when the hair follicles suddenly have less of the natural "hair growth agent" estrogen available.
In cases of hereditary hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, the hair follicles in the vertex area of women react sensitively to the relative increase in androgen levels with the onset of menopause. The hair follicles and their hairs become, in a sense, miniaturized. Sometimes, both types of hair loss can overlap. When "self-inflicted" hair loss due to hair dye is added to the mix, concerns about one's appearance increase considerably.
Good remedy for hair loss*
Better than a hair dye that is supposed to conceal hair loss but actually increases it, is the natural molecule thiocyanate in Thiocyn Hair Serum, because it can significantly reduce temporary hair loss*. patented thiocyanate active formula Regulates and stimulates the cellular metabolism of the hair follicles and normalizes the hair cycle. When more hair is in the growth phase and fewer hairs are in the regeneration phase, excessive hair loss* will subside and hair density will slowly increase again.
